Bobby And The Midnites – Bob Weir (Arista AL 9568) Brent Mydland appears on this October 21, 1981 release with the black cat cover. Some albums also released as ALB6-8367 and AL5-8148 and as 8558. Also on CD. Midnite the Cat was on a TV show called “Andy’s Gang”, which Weir had watched as a small child. Weir sketched the cat, and Victor Moscoso made the drawing on the album cover. “Haze” was written, more or less, as a eulogy for Weir’s friend Bruce Baxter. “Too Many Losers” had several working titles, including “F*ckin’ With Fire” and “Stokin’ With Fire”, but Weir was told by Clive Davis, of Arista Records, to tone down the title. It was written for a couple of Weir’s friends. “Far Away” was developed over a Matthew Kelly riff, played around with by Weir and Bobby Cochran. “Book Of Rules” was previously recorded by The Heptones, and that version appears to be based on a poem “A Bag Of Tools” by R. L. Sharp. The lyrics to “Me Without You” were originally written by Alphonso Johnson, then rewritten by Bob Weir, and finally by Barlow. As originally written by Bob Weir, “Josephine” has more verses than were recorded. “(I Want To) Fly Away” was written with Bob Marley in mind. “Carry Me” is a simple love letter. “Festival” was written over a span of several years.
