Gilbert Shelton created the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers as an underground newspaper strip in the late sixties. The stars were brothers Fat Freddy, Phineas, and Freewheelin’ Frank Freak. These lovable druggies were always broke and they seemingly spent nearly all their waking time looking for drugs. “After all,” they held, “dope will get you through times with no money better than money will get you through times with no dope!” The lives of the Freak Brothers revolve around the procurement and enjoyment of recreational drugs, particularly marijuana. The comics present a critique of the establishment, while satirising counterculture.

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers is an underground comic about a fictional trio of stoner characters, created by the American artist Gilbert Shelton. He later did the cover art to The Grateful Dead’s 1978 album, Shakedown Street.. The Freak Brothers first appeared in The Rag, an underground newspaper published in Austin, Texas, beginning in May 1968, and were regularly reprinted in underground papers around the United States and in other parts of the world. Later their adventures were published in a series of comic books.

The edition was published in the UK in 1976. Probably one of the first editions hence the pricetag: “40 p” (?)
