Jack O Roses, a record that never came out on CD is an absolute gem. A haunting collection of songs many recorded by the Dead. What’s so very special about this collection is it has the original Lady of Carlisle a traditional ballad that was source material for Hunter’s Terrrapin Suite. The song that makes the whole thing worth the price is the Complete Terrapin Suite with parts included that the Dead never performed. Why this never made it onto to CD or a U.S. release is a mystery.
Unbelievable. Hunter has told the story of the creation of Terrapin, one of the Dead’s absolute masterpieces. He said he wrote the lyrics one afternoon while looking out a huge bay window overlooking San Fran during a lightning storm. Garcia was driving crosstown when he was suddenly struck with a chord progression he had to hurry home and fish out on his guitar. Hunter came over with the Terrapin lyrics later that night and after Garcia read them he smiled and said perfect he had just written the music….
